The future seems... almost ok?
Just how inventive the Romanian can be is absolutely amazing, especially the one that converts himself to this nationality, the confident expatriate whom, by reaching a foreign country makes a solemn statement and an oath to himself to borrow as many personality traits as possible from the local inhabitants. And since the native born seem to have the gift to crush every single rest of optimism it is only obvious that the newcomer shall immediately decide to put together what is left of his goodwill in a bag. Thus, as you may discover in this solitary article, one of his main features is that of abandoning virtue in the dumpster. This being said, allow us to get carried away. Of main importance is the show taking place in front of our eyes, without a script. To make things clearer, the involved “characters” are : the hones HR company and the second is an international human resources enterprise, recently transferred to Bucharest and with its head-quarters in Timisoara. Following a prolonged exchange of e-mails and many long talks over the phone a face-to-face meeting is arranged, having in mind a satisfactory collaboration. But no one had imagined what an impact a human resources consultant could have on us when with her inarticulate English, a violent reinterpretation of everything we knew about this language, she reminded us that the end of humanity is near by lack of humane behavior. How things occurred, in chronological order. At the notorious encounter the HR Company was represented by a native speaker of Hungarian and a second person having advanced both in English and in French. The HR consultant, representing the international enterprise, who was suppose to be capable to use at the least a minimum amount of words in more than one language, refused to speak English, preferring a more comfortable and familiar approach in Hungarian. We are now entitled to ask ourselves whether the woman was familiar with any other language than her native one or maybe she was merely ashamed to at the least try and use some auxiliary hand gestures in an attempt to mime if not to speak the language. My amusement bares certain sadness when it comes to people who, to enhance their vanity, engage themselves in petty battles. It is obvious that one of the people supposedly involved in the dialogue had in fact been left out of the conversation. The hairs on the back of the neck stand up and their eyes turn as cold and impersonal as the thick glass protecting a high-security bank while their lips gently murmur: ”does anybody have a knife?” The fact that real life makes it impossible for us to make use of the fundamentally important “ignore” option of the virtual world, determines us to try and secure ourselves by any other method. Under these circumstances, one truly competent person, tumultuously intelligent and with a professional experience worthy of anybody’s envy, had been isolated by another whose competence was and still is under great doubt. Following such moments, the heterogeneous general mood was impossible to repair taking into account that the conversation would continue to develop between two of the three persons in the room. Now, excuse the laughter in the background but I cannot help but wonder if the now famous HR consultant was planning to let his host fry in her own juice until she will have the necessary state of mind to give her a glance.
And to think that the specialists in this domain are still pondering what are the wheels stuck in this domain! We have the answer and it’s as simple as it can get: it’s the people!
No need for an interview
Maybe you’re expecting advice on what are the does and dons’t in an interview. It is in no way our intention to join the rest of our colleagues who always have an already prepared answer for every question, we would hate to repeat what has already been said or written. We wouldn’t like that at all!
We’ve decided to tell you stories about every day happenings, events to which colleagues and candidates participate.
First week’s story:
“When the woman bares the burden”
“Hello, I’m calling on behalf of a HR company, my name is Aurelia Jocu and I would like to speak to Daniela Pop. Is that possible, asked our colleague using a respectful tone. “This is her husband, you can tell me what this is about?” “No offence, but I would rather talk to her, if it is possible.” “We don’t talk to whomever calls, said the man with a perky voice.” “Sir, I did introduce myself, now, I would like to know if I may talk to your wife" insisted our colleague. “Tell me, I want to know all the details about the job, how much it pays and especially what company we’re talking about" - the irritated husband continued. “I cannot give such details away, all I can tell you is that the position is of senior consultant at a bank and that your wife applied for the job. After reading her resume we considered that she should be invited for an interview." “Well, If I’m sure it’s something serious, then it’s ok, if not, then she won’t come, you understand, right?" “As you wish, sir" - the consultant backed up, wanting to end the conversation. “You see, that fact that you won’t tell me makes you just as unreliable as all the others, we’ve had plenty of experiences like this one..." - yelled the husband. “Sir, you are using the plural, on who’s behalf are you speaking?" our now irritated consultant asked... “I speak for myself and for my wife, she doesn’t decide anything without my approval, I say what is and isn’t permited.” “Thank you for your time, sir, good bye!”
But the last couple of words remained unheard because he, the husband, had put the phone down without caring for any farewells.
A few minutes later the wife called, probably after gaining her husband’s approval, only to be informed that we were no longer interested in an interview with her, the husband had taken care of it all.
